Ytterbium(III) oxide is the chemical compound with the formula Yb2O3. It is one of the more commonly encountered compounds of ytterbium. It has the “rare-earth C-type sesquioxide” structure which is related to the fluorite structure with one-quarter of the anions removed, leading to ytterbium atoms in two different six-coordinate (non-octahedral) environments.

Ytterbium Oxide is insoluble in water, moderately soluble in strong Mineral Acids, and slightly hygroscopic instability.
Ytterbium Oxide is mainly used to make colorants for glasses and ceramics, used to make laser materials, also used as an additive for electronic computer memory elements (magnetic bubble ).

Ytterbium Oxide has a significantly higher emissivity in the infrared range than Magnesium Oxide, a higher radiant intensity is obtained with Ytterbium-based payloads in comparison to those commonly based on Magnesium/Teflon/Viton (MTV).
