Lead is seldom found uncombined in nature, it is mostly found in the form of Lead Oxides. Lead Oxides includes all oxides of Lead (Pb). In Lead Oxide category, all three lead Oxides are subcategorized as Lead Sub Oxide, which is a mixture of Lead Oxides & free Lead Powder and commercially called as Grey Oxide secondly reddish oxide of lead as Red Lead used as a pigment in paints, glass and ceramics thirdly a Yellow Lead Oxide, also called Lead Monoxide and commercially called Litharge.
Application
Test for Lead in water:
Reagents: Ammonia-Sodium sulphite solution
Dithizone solution
Chlorofrom
Procedure:
. 20 drops of sample was taken in a beaker.
. Adding 15 drops of Ammonia-Sodium sulphite solution.
. Adding 2 drops of Dithizone solution.
. Adding 20 drops of chloroform to the above mixture.
. Shake well and allow the phases to separate.
. Note the colour of thte lower layer.
Result: A deep orange colour indicates the presence of lead.
(This test can detect upto 4 x 10-6 ppm of lead)

Procedure:
