It is also used as a powerful drying agent, or desiccant, in commercial and industrial usage. It is also useful for the construction of gas masks. It plays an essential role for the measurement of soil carbon dioxide efflux upon absorption. It is also useful for direct measurement of dissolved carbon dioxide.
Application
Soda-Lime is a mixture of chemicals, used in granular form in closed breathing environments, such as general anesthesia, submarines, rebreathers, recompression chambers, respiratory therapy departments and xenon delivery systems, to remove carbon dioxide from breathing gases to prevent CO2 retention and carbon dioxide
Dosage
When CO2 reacts with soda lime, heat and water are formed, and pH changes. The latter causes the indicator contained in soda lime to change color (typically from white to pink), indicating that the absorbent is near the point of exhaustion. Absorbent should be changed when 2/3 of the canister has changed color.
