TEMED (N,N,N',N'-Tetramethylethylenediamine) is a tertiary amine used to catalyze formation of free radicals from ammonium persulfate (APS) and riboflavin. Because of its properties, TEMED promotes the acrylamide polymerization process.
Application
N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine is an ethylenediamine derivative in which each nitrogen carries two methyl substituents. It is widely employed both as a ligand for metal ions and as a catalyst in organic polymerisation. It has a role as a chelator and a catalyst.
Dosage
The reaction is a vinyl addition polymerization initiated by a free radical-generating system (Chrambach 1985). Polymerization is initiated by ammonium persulfate and TEMED (tetramethylethylenediamine): TEMED accelerates the rate of formation of free radicals from persulfate and these in turn catalyze polymerization.
